Ongoing Environmental Progress at the Former Houston Wood Preserving Works Site

Union Pacific continues to advance environmental remediation at the former Houston Wood Preserving Works site in Houston’s Fifth Ward. Routine inspections and monitoring show remediation measures are effective.

As part of ongoing efforts, Union Pacific conducts weekly inspections of the nearby Englewood rail yard to maintain the engineered caps that covers contaminated soil.

Groundwater sampling is performed twice a year from over 120 monitoring wells. The most recent data show the underground plume has not moved, and there is no exposure pathway to reach the community.

Every planned step, from constructing physical barriers and expanding contaminant recovery to ongoing testing and reporting, is designed to protect the Fifth Ward community and restore the neighborhood’s environment.

The long-term goal is both to address historical contamination and to give the community confidence that the site is securely managed.
