The Former Houston Wood
Preserving Works Site

Union Pacific Statement on Preliminary Fieldwork Testing

Technical experts will be at the former Houston Wood Preserving Works (HWPW) site and in adjacent rights of way Nov. 30-Dec. 2, to conduct preliminary field work in advance of preparing a detailed vapor intrusion study. The work is part of collaborative efforts between the City of Houston, Harris County, Bayou City Initiative (BCI) and Union Pacific Railroad regarding the HWPW site.

Experts will be in the field evaluating and testing the site’s existing monitoring equipment, as they consider the best methods to further study any risks to the public and environment associated with soil and groundwater contamination, as well as from the offsite groundwater plume. There are many sophisticated sampling methods that could be used, and this field work will enable experts to identify which are the most efficient and effective.  Based on information gained this week, we will prepare a sampling plan for a comprehensive vapor intrusion study.
