Expansion of Union Pacific’s Englewood Yard Boosts Economy for U.S., Texas

Railroad Working with Texas Environmental Agency on Soil Sampling as Project Advances

Union Pacific continues to make major investments in its Englewood rail yard to improve operational capacity to support growth in the critical Houston and Gulf Coast market. As the next phase of this important service enhancement, which benefits many Houston partners, moves forward, Union Pacific is prioritizing safety, sustainability and community.

Union Pacific notified the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) that it plans to  sample soil to characterize the presence of any potential chemicals of concern prior to construction activities. (Click to read Union Pacific’s submission to TCEQ.) This proposed soil sampling plan includes drilling holes at the site, including through the concrete cap to obtain samples. Each hole will be plugged and any concrete damage will be repaired.

Union Pacific will continue to keep the community updated as this project moves forward. Plans associated with the mitigation of contamination will be submitted to the TCEQ for review and approval prior to the start of construction activities.  By supporting efficient train movements through one of the busiest crossroads in the country, Union Pacific is contributing the economy for local businesses, as well as across the state and even the country.
